Warning Language+

Warning Language+ is a vibrant new two-man painting exhibition by up-coming Sydney/Mongolian artist Ganbold Lundaa (aka. Gawaa), and Sydney based artist Dirk Kruithof. It will be opening at Newtowns Alpha House Gallery on Friday, September 9, at 6.00pm.

Bold, irreverent and colourful, the works themes centre around text, language, communication and wordplay in direct, playful and poetic ways. Both artists have studied fine arts at St George TAFE Kogarah and are also influenced by the urban environment, its signs and symbols.

The artists have a spontaneous yet critical approach to contemporary artmaking summed up by an attitude and work ethic of ‘get on with it’ and ‘make yourself useful!’.

There will also be musical performances during the night including a Mongolian throat singer, and complimentary drinks with the artists from 6pm.

The show continues until September 18.

Alpha House Gallery hours are 11am to 4pm Thursday to Saturday, and 11am to 1pm on Sunday for the duration of the show.

Come and see some fun, accessible and thought provoking new artworks.

DRYADS and DIVAS

A stimulating and sensual photography exhibition in Sydney promises to give its audience an intimate look into the inner emotions of some of Sydney’s most colourful identities and infamous public performers in a range of unexpected settings.

A joint exhibition by photographers Paola Talbert and Catherine Hourihan called Dryads and Divas opens at Alpha Gallery on Fri May 13th as part of the 2011 Head On Photo Festival. The exhibition showcases the human figure in highly contrasting contexts emphasising the sensual and provocative aspects of each artists work.

Catherine Hourihan’s photography draws on her extensive experience as a dancer, choreographer and burlesque performer in Sydney and New York. Her current work features a series of fantastical portraits of local Sydney divas and stage performers including dominatrix, artist and infamous Sydney personality Madam Lash (Gretel Pinniger).

Hourihan’s surreal photos capture her subjects in unlikely urban scenes, constructing a pictorial space between fantasy and reality. She has been exhibiting her photographs since her return to Sydney in 2008.

Paola Talbert’s photographic work celebrates the link between the human form and nature. Evoking the tree fairies of English and Irish mythology (dryads), Talbert uses the human physical presence to invigorate the imaginative aspects of nature photography. Her pictures express the inherent sensual connection between nature and the body.

Talbert’s underwater figure photography has been featured in solo and group exhibitions in Australia and Italy since 2001. She cites the black and white photographs of Martha Graham by Barbara Morgan as a key influence. Her work incorporates aspects of studio portraiture, underwater figure, landscape and traditional black and white film techniques.

WHEN: OPENING Friday 13 May Sunday 22 May 2011.
